Medication Adherence: Why Taking Your Medication as Prescribed Matters

Getting the right prescription is only half the battle. Taking it consistently is what allows it to work as intended. Even the most effective medication can’t do its job if doses are skipped regularly or the medication is stopped too soon.

This is known as medication adherence; taking your medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. While missing an occasional dose may not always cause immediate problems, consistently taking medications incorrectly can reduce their effectiveness and, in some cases, lead to serious health complications.

Why Consistency Matters

Prescription medications are studied and approved based on patients taking them exactly as directed. The benefits seen in clinical studies depend on consistent use.

It’s tempting to think that taking a medication only part of the time will provide part of the benefit. Unfortunately, that isn’t always how medications work.

For example, many antidepressants need time to build up in your body before they become fully effective. If doses are missed frequently, the medication may never reach the levels needed to improve symptoms.

The same is true for many medications used to treat chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Taking them consistently helps keep these conditions under control.

“I Feel Better. Can I Stop Taking It?”

This is one of the most common questions pharmacists hear.

Let’s use high blood pressure as an example. If your blood pressure improves after starting medication, it’s often because the medication is doing its job, not because your high blood pressure has gone away.

Stopping the medication without your healthcare provider’s guidance may allow your blood pressure to rise again, increasing your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other complications.

That said, there are situations where medications can be reduced or even discontinued. Lifestyle changes such as weight loss, regular exercise, healthier eating habits, or quitting smoking may reduce the need for certain medications over time.

Your health can also change as you age, meaning your medication doses may need to be adjusted. The important thing is to make those decisions together with your healthcare provider, not on your own.

Why Do People Miss Doses?

Missing medication doesn’t always happen because someone doesn’t care. Life gets busy, and there are many reasons people fall behind, including:

  • Forgetting a dose
  • Busy work or family schedules
  • Running out of medication
  • Side effects
  • Cost concerns
  • Feeling better and thinking the medication is no longer needed

If any of these situations sound familiar, talk with your pharmacist. There are often simple solutions that can make staying on track much easier.

Will Missing One Dose Hurt Me?

The answer depends on the medication.

Missing a cholesterol medication for a day or two is generally less concerning than missing medications such as insulin or certain seizure medications, where missed doses can quickly become serious.

The best approach is to take every medication as prescribed whenever possible. If you accidentally miss a dose, don’t panic—but don’t guess either. Some medications can be taken when you remember, while others should be skipped if it’s close to your next scheduled dose. Never double up unless your healthcare provider or pharmacist instructs you to do so.

When in doubt, call your pharmacist for guidance.

Tips to Stay on Track

Building a routine can make medication adherence much easier. Consider these simple strategies:

  • Use a weekly pill organizer.
  • Set reminders on your phone or smartwatch.
  • Take your medication at the same time each day.
  • Pair your medication with another daily habit, such as brushing your teeth or eating breakfast.
  • Request refills before you run out.

If you take multiple prescriptions, Cornwell Pharmacy’s Medication Synchronization (Med Sync) program can simplify your routine by coordinating eligible prescriptions so they’re ready for pickup on the same day each month. Fewer pharmacy trips can make it much easier to stay consistent.

Better Health Starts with Better Adherence

There’s an old saying: “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” The same applies to your medications. Taking them consistently gives them the best opportunity to work as intended and helps you get the full benefit of your treatment.
